About the role: 

Data already powers insights, products and capabilities in every part of Ocado Technology but we’re really just getting started. We are growing our global Data Engineering team focussing on the Advanced Technology stream with the mission to serve reliable and relevant product data to internal and external customers.  This is important to help product managers make better decisions on how to take Dexterous Manipulation Robotics and Autonomous Mobility capabilities to the next level.

This position will support the development of a data-driven culture and lead the drive towards using analytics and machine learning in the stream. We have the ambition to become more evidence-driven in our decision-making, and data plays an integral part in translating that ambition into reality, by informing the building of our products.

The Senior Data Engineer’s role is to design, build and maintain scalable, robust and performant data pipelines and related systems that meet technical and functional requirements.  Data engineering work takes place fully in GCP with pre-ingested data coming from our applications.  What you’ll be doing…..

  • Design, implement and manage the Data Platform based on GCP
  • Design & implement data observability and data governance in the data platform
  • Collaborate with platform teams to select data storage, ingestion, and digestion technologies to meet consumption and ingestion patterns
  • Proactively design data unit tests to ensure quality and gain visibility into potential anomalies 
  • Monitor data objects and provide operational support
  • Promote best practices in data engineering (i.e naming conventions, pipeline design standards, DBT model best practices)
  • Stay up-to-date with industry developments including conferences, the launch of new technologies and new patterns in data engineering

What we’re looking for: 

  • You have a strong grounding in Python, Terraform, SQL, BigQuery and other GCP services
  • You have good experience using Terraform to manage GCP infrastructure and permissions
  • You have a strong programming experience in Python to build Web apps and API services
  • You have a good experience with CI/CD pipelines, preferably GitLab CI/CD
  • You are a team player, with experience fostering a culture that is innovative, motivational and highly productive.
  • You are commercially minded and can put data into context
  • You are proactive, identifying issues and opportunities before having to be told to do so
  • You have strong communication and stakeholder management skills

This would make you stand out from the crowd:

  • Strong experience in software engineering and data analytics, particularly in a lead role
  • You have a wealth of experience using GCP for data engineering
  • Experience with the modern data stack, including tools such as dbt, Looker and Airflow.
