Who We Are
Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. The company’s custom electric autonomous vehicles are designed to bring the things you need—from produce to prescriptions—right to your home. Nuro’s autonomous, goods-focused solution can give you valuable time back and more freedom to do what you love. This convenient, eco-friendly alternative to driving has the potential to make streets safer and cities more livable.
About The Team
The Systems Engineering team is responsible for the requirements, architecture, and validation of autonomous driving capabilities across engineering disciplines. This includes designing performance metrics, evaluation methods, and criteria for success, which the team then drives cross-functional via requirement definition and system validation. Systems Engineering works at the intersection of hardware, software, and robot operations, with a deep understanding of technologies in all three. We are a small, high-impact team that sets the checkpoints for autonomy deployment.
Responsibilities
- Decompose system and subsystem requirements into module level requirements that are relevant to Autonomy Behavior. A successful candidate is expected to work with more than one autonomy module validation, e.g. perception, pose, localization, calibration.
- Work closely with SWEs, TLs, and Product Managers to review and recommend changes to module level performance evaluation to improve autonomy behavior in ODDs of interest.
- Work closely with simulation engineers to ensure high fidelity, appropriate tools to evaluate the performance of your focus modules and their interaction with one another
- Recommend coverage of test suites for module level evaluation, including ensuring the realism, relevance, and appropriate performance expectations of proposed tests.
- Prepare intra or inter-module budgets for metrics like latency to support an optimal system budget for end to end autonomy behavior
- Support SOTIF and fault management analysis at the module level and serve as a Systems POC to SW for your focus modules
- Work closely with robot development and HW systems engineering teams to quantify the impact of changes to HW in your focus modules, or vice versa. Your impact is expected to enable the next generation of robots be ready for autonomy and operations
Role: Depending on the skills and interests of candidates, we will assign the hired engineer to a combination of modules to support SWEs in the development of module evaluation and targeted validation
About You
Must Haves:
- Deep understanding of how robotic systems work and ability to leverage this knowledge to build tooling and infrastructure to evaluate them
- Experience working deeply on at least one core autonomy module: pose and localization, routing, perception, motion planning and controls.
- Hands on experience in systems engineering (safety experience is NOT required)
- Ability to read Code in C++ and Write Code in Python
- Strong collaboration and communication skills - both verbal and written
- 10+ years of technical work experience in a relevant area, of which 6 or so years at-least should be in robotics SW
- Self starter and fast learner - you should be passionate about picking up new skills and approaching unstructured problems from first principles
Nice to Haves:
- Experience working in more than one autonomy module
- AV background. Can be any autonomous vehicle (aerial vehicles, flying cars, autonomous boats, spacecraft, rovers, etc.) not just terrestrial
- Hands on coding day-to-day or technically fluent in and experience working in a team with strong software engineering practices
- Familiarity with the V-model and the end to end process of setting requirements, tests, and iterating for product readiness
