About the Role

Today’s AI is data-hungry, and this couldn’t be more true in the robotics space. More data means better perception and prediction models, bigger and more accurate maps, and more scenarios for simulation so we are more confident in the robot’s safety.

Needless to say, data is only useful if it is stored and accessible. Our storage team builds large-scale systems to store all Nuro’s precious vehicle testing and simulation data and make it available to all other teams at Nuro. As one of the most fundamental pieces of infrastructure at Nuro, these systems are engineered to scale, to be up and running all the time, to be secure, and to be extremely cost-effective.

In this role, you will help us develop and improve these systems.

About the Work

• Design and implement distributed systems that can scale to the exabyte-level (which is 1,000,000 terabytes) and span across the whole US continent.
• Optimize our core algorithms, including the data layout, data placement, caching, and compression algorithms. Analyze the data and access patterns and tailor the algorithms to the usage patterns.
• Write high-performance I/O libraries and services in C++ and Go. Root cause CPU and network performance issues.
• Develop tools to help us and our customers to understand the usage and cost.
• Continuously improve the reliability of the systems we build.
• Implement features to secure our data storage, and protect the sensitive information in the data.
• Work with our customer teams to understand their requirements and help them troubleshoot issues.

About you

• Strong proficiency in C++, Go, or similar languages.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems.
• You are familiar with the software development workflow and can independently execute a project, from design to development to the final rollout.
• You have start-up DNA: You have demonstrated an ability to thrive in the ambiguity of a dynamic, start-up environment or have the DNA to do so
• You possess a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.

Bonus Points

• Experience with cloud computing, such as Google Cloud Platform and AWS.
• Experience with C++ &/or Go.
• Experience in designing and developing distributed storage systems, such as distributed databases, object storage clusters, and storage virtualization.
• Experience with Linux programming.
• Strong networking knowledge and/or experience in debugging network performance issues.
• Experience with performance debugging. Familiar with profiling or distributed tracing tools.
• Strong project management skills.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $152,000 and $228,000 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
