Systems Software Engineer

The Systems Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will monitor, prevent, and resolve application system performance bottlenecks. Proactively ensure SLAs are maintained and systems are built for sustainability. Understand technical concepts necessary and industry trends in software engineering. Utilize cloud-based PaaS and SaaS platforms and integration points to On Prem infrastructure. Automate deployment and operations of self-managed GitLab, Artifactory, SonarQube, and other tools in AWS to support enterprise CICD needs. Configure base AMIs using Packer build process to support operating CICD products in AWS. Implement continuous delivery pipelines for shared services in GitLab using scripting languages such as Bash, Powershell, and Python. Implement containerized microservices CICD solutions within AWS leveraging GitLab, Docker, Ansible, and Kubernetes. Configure Kibana to collect logs from cloud-watch, RDS, and Ubuntu, and store in Elastic stack block storage to display in Kibana dashboard. Create and update Grafana dashboards to visualize data collected from internal Python collection processes. Deploy and update centrally managed Jenkins instances to support CICD needs outside of those served by GitLab runners. Identify resolutions for CICD platform support escalations that dedicated support resources cannot solve. Guide development of junior engineers. Telecommuting permitted. Salary $108,326 - $153,010 per year.

Minimum Requirements: Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related field, plus 1 year (or a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years) of experience as a systems engineer, software engineer, or related occupation. Experience must include 1 year of experience with each of the following: (1) CICD concepts and tools including GitLab, testing, change management, blue/green, and infrastructure as code; (2) infrastructure automation tools and coding using ansible, terraform, python, JavaScript, or PowerShell; (3) creating and managing infrastructure on AWS; (4) working with Linux operating system; (5) building Docker images; (6) Cloud-based PaaS and SaaS platforms and integration points to On Prem infrastructure; and (7) virtualization and containerization.
