Mission Summary
Motional is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help enhance the capabilities and efficiency of our machine learning platform. The Training Platform team’s scope ranges from developing python libraries for performant data access, to owning the code and infrastructure for submitting jobs to our gpu cluster, to accelerating our training jobs. This team’s combination of breadth and depth offers many opportunities for impact as you interact with a variety of internal customers and help define our vision for the future.
What you'll do:
- Communicate with machine learning engineers to identify obstacles and prioritize solutions
- Consider cloud costs, scalability, maintainability, and implementation time tradeoffs
- Design, prototype, and implement solutions in our ML codebase (Python) and platform codebase (Go)
- Optimize and debug code to make every step of the model training process run smoothly
What we're looking for:
- Strong Python coding skills are a must
- Linux, shell, and Docker familiarity
- Experience designing, developing and maintaining production systems in AWS
- Ownership of projects through requirements gathering, design, and implementation phases
- Willingness to learn and contribute wherever impact is needed rather than only in a single area
- Education in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Machine Learning, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience
Bonus points (not required):
- Experience in the ML platform space
- Experience with CPU and GPU performance optimization
- Experience with Pytorch or other deep learning libraries
- Experience with Go and Kubernetes
- Experience with distributed systems and database systems
- Experience working with large datasets and big data technologies
- Experience with backend web development

The Motional Pittsburgh office is located in the new Hazelwood Green development, a culmination of the city’s goal of restoring an economic driver to the neighborhood in a thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable way. With views along the Monongahela river, the Pittsburgh office is in the heart of this new state of the art development. This position can support remote work within the United States.
