Principal Software Engineer

Being a member of the Incubations team means working on projects with high ambiguity. We need engineers adept at looking around corners and creating order out of chaos so we land on the best architecture and design from a myriad of options. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer who can communicate the project strategy across a broad set of individuals – users, contributors, internal and external partners – with varying levels of technical depth.  

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience building large scale distributed systems, graph databases and managed services in Azure or on non-Microsoft platforms and technologies.
• Proficient in data technologies including relational and document databases and caching. 
• Experience in Internet Of Things, streaming or event driven programming and developing applications in Rust.
• Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team. 

Software Engineering IC5 The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.

We’re looking for a Principal Software Engineer with experience bringing projects to first version products or services. You’ll help us evolve a strategic, high potential incubation into an open source project with potential to deliver a 1P service within the Azure ecosystem. In this role you will: 

• Deliver new data centric technology to detect and react to changes in existing data sources. 
• Establish engineering processes and drive technology choices to deliver a performant, resilient, secure product that we are happy to share with the open-source community. Demonstrate deep understanding of the up and downstream effects of these choices.

• Build bridges between groups, providing team, community, and industry leadership and help define strategy. Enable cross team communications and resolve conflicts between teams.

• Lead incorporation of appropriate continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics of value.
