Senior Director, Software Engineering & Site Lead

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Engineering Director to provide technical expertise and people leadership to lead full-stack development for our card management products at Marqeta. This leader will be responsible for forming a new team experienced in scaling products and creating compelling end-user applications. In addition, this leader will be the Site Lead for our expansion into Poland. 

What you'll do

• Partner with product teams to define the strategy for Marqeta’s card management product offerings.
• Oversee and drive the technical vision for full-stack development platforms (including frontend and backend), ensuring scalability, usability, security, and efficiency.
• Provide technical leadership for Marqeta’s modern web-based application development and full-service ownership approach.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, establishing and promoting best practices.
• Bring new ideas, designs and tools to the table, and drive technical discussions and decision-making.
• Raise the skill sets of those around you and make Marqeta better through your presence. Mentor other engineers on the team, drawing on your experience to provide thoughtful direction.
• Initiate conversations around goal setting and give regular feedback and coaching to your team members.
• Ensure delivery of high-quality software by employing effective code reviews, automated testing strategies and high availability deployment strategies.
• As a site lead, you will have the following additional responsibilities:
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all site-related matters, representing the site's interests within the organization.
  • Champion a diverse and values-driven work culture within the local team, ensuring that it aligns seamlessly with the broader organizational principles.
  • Continuously identify further opportunities to optimize Poland as a strategic talent hub.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior leadership and stakeholders on site performance, challenges, and opportunities, while maintaining a transparent and effective communication channels within the site and with corporate headquarters.
  • Foster strong relationships with local partners, government entities, and industry stakeholders while serving as the primary point of contact for legal and entity-related matters. Additionally, proactively identify and mitigate potential market risks and challenges.

What we're looking for

• 15+ years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years with an advanced degree. In lieu of a degree, 18+ years of relevant experience may suffice.
• 10+ years of people management experience.
• Extensive experience working with cross teams across geographic boundaries and time zones.
• Demonstrated passion for software engineering excellence including design principles, metrics, frontend and backend scalability, cost, security & privacy considerations and test driven development.
• Excellent collaboration, communication and leadership skills. Can effectively lead a project and work cross-functionally with other organizations.
• Experience partnering with product teams to ideate and bring innovative solutions to market.
• Experience in developing and scaling applications using modern frontend technologies such as Web Components, React, React Native / Flutter and ecosystem.
• Experience in developing applications with modern Java backend stack using Spring Boot and Kubernetes on AWS.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail.
• Expertise in creating a metrics oriented approach to software development including driving key operational metrics, full service ownership and continuous improvement.

Nice to haves

• Hands-on experience building embedded frontend components that users can customize.
• Experience with authentication solutions such as Auth0.
• Exposure to a modern Java backend stack using Spring Boot, Kubernetes on AWS.
• Experience with transactional RDBMS such as MySQL, Postgres, MS SQL Server, or Oracle.
