Company Snapshot

Linden Lab develops platforms that empower people to create, share, and thrive within virtual experiences.

Founded in 1999, the company first launched Second Life, the groundbreaking virtual world enjoyed by millions around the globe, in 2003, which has since gone on to boast nearly two billion user creations and a vibrant $500 million (USD) economy.

At Linden, we value a workplace that’s as diverse as our products. As we continue to grow, we remain dedicated to building a company that is rooted in organizational health, strengths-based leadership, and the belief that teams are stronger than individuals.

If you want access to the forefront of virtual words, this is the place for you. We’ve created space for everyone to find belonging and invite you to come as you are.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Software Engineer to support the company’s continued ability to provide support and accounts services to our Residents. This role reports to an Engineering Manager and will be responsible for combining research, data, experience, and feedback from managers and teams to solve problems for our stakeholders, often with code.

You’ll be a key contributor on the Internal Tools and Payments team, empowered to take ownership, be proactive, and bring innovative thinking and creative approaches to maximize the effectiveness of our software platform.

What We’ll Offer You

The stability of an established company with new startup momentum. An unparalleled opportunity to create  relationships, systems, strategy and culture. An environment where your voice will be heard and your impact deeply felt. A sense of belonging where your work is appreciated and rewarded.

This is an opportunity to collaborate with and learn from deeply experienced colleagues in their respective areas and to contribute your domain knowledge to the broader team

What We’ll Create Together

  • Maintainable code that enables users to login to, administer, and handle currency in their accounts
  • Services that allow our support agents to give our customers excellent issue resolution
  • A team that is constantly learning and honing our software development craft and that has each other’s back
  • Day-to-day tasks would include writing full-stack code and unit tests, both alone and sometimes in pairing sessions with other developers, both in existing and brand new codebases
  • In the first 3 months you’ll have several days of on-boarding, shadow other team members through development and deploy cycle, become familiar with our development process so you can manage a release to production with confidence, give feedback on project design documents and requirements, start a more substantial feature of your own while clarifying requirements with the stakeholders and use Second Life for meetings and fun!

What You’ll Bring to the Team

At Linden, we celebrate all the dimensions of diversity, including diversity of experience. We recognize that candidates applying for this role will be most successful if they bring the following with them:

  • 3 - 5 years experience programming using scripted languages such as Python
  • Exposure across the web stack: HTML, CSS, Javascript, Web frameworks both client and server, scripting languages, SQL and NoSQL databases preferred, and RESTful APIs
  • Experience using relational databases such as MySQL
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent in experience
  • Humility in all professional situations including while giving & receiving performance feedback
  • Forward thinking and preceptive teammate - you can see and lead the team towards a design thinking outcome
  • Collaboration that is more than being a team player. You are a team partner that will bring your best and share knowledge to ensure everyone levels up

If you feel like you don’t meet all of the requirements for this role, we encourage you to apply anyway. The confidence gap and imposter syndrome can sometimes get in the way of meeting incredible candidates and we don’t want it to get in the way of meeting you. We encourage you to reach out if you have belief in our mission and your own ability to contribute to our team!
