Staff Data Engineer

About the role

Juniper Square is growing rapidly, and our data needs are growing even faster, so we’re rolling out a brand new Data Engineering Team. As our first Staff Data Engineer your role will be pivotal to evolving our existing data and reporting experiences. You’ll build out pipelines to gather data from multiple sources and make it available for analysis. You will shape both internal and external analytics products to help guide business-critical decisions, enhance their workflows, and improve decision-making. 

The ideal candidate is technically skilled, business savvy, intuitive with respect to delving into user needs and exceptionally driven. 

What you’ll do

• Collect and synthesize business requirements and establish priorities with cross-department stakeholders.
• Design and implement sophisticated data models in SQL and LookML. 
• Work closely with the Engineers to ensure sound, scalable implementation.
• Act as a technical expert on our team regarding all things data, especially as the data team grows and evolves.
• Introduce new technologies to evolve and enhance our data pipeline capabilities.
• Document data models, architectural decisions and data dictionaries to enable collaboration, maintainability and usability of our analytics platforms and code.
• Assist with governance, guidance, code reviews, and access controls so that we maintain consistency, quality, and business confidentiality as we scale analytics access across the company and to customers.
• Externally: learn our application data schema, and develop a fluency in how to transform it to enhance customer’s decision-making with data.
• Internally: guide product and development teams, advising on instrumentation and laying development foundations for product usage reporting.
• Train technical and business users, providing education and support on data and reporting best practices.
• Fulfill projects with minimal guidance but with an appropriate sense of when and how to collaborate with others.
• Implement and monitor security best practices in our data, warehouse and analytics environments.

Qualifications

You have a love of thorny problems, and taking ownership to find and implement solutions with your teammates and for Juniper Square’s customers.  Fully qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate at least 5+ years of experience in the following areas:

• Strong command of relational databases, (Postgresql preferred)
• Experience with cloud based services (AWS RDS and Aurora preferred)
• Experience developing on (or administering) BI / data visualization platforms (ex. Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Mode, Data Studio, Domo, QlikView etc.).
• Comfortable writing SQL or any other statistical/object oriented programming language and ability to perform effective querying involving multiple tables.
• Basic understanding of data modeling, database design and ETL (Extraction Transform Load) services.
• Demonstrated history of translating data into clear and actionable narratives and communicating opportunities and challenges relevant to stakeholders.
• Work well cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders, understanding and synthesizing needs, prioritizing work, seeking feedback and communicating progress.
• You’re not expected to know everything, but you’re expected to know where to go to find the answers.

Compensation

Compensation for this position includes a base salary, equity, and a variety of benefits. The U.S. base salary range for this role is $151,200 - $252,000. Actual base salaries will be based on candidate-specific factors, including experience, skillset, and location, and local minimum pay requirements as applicable.
