The salary range for this position is $133,046 - $174,192.
We are looking for a Staff Quantum Simulation Engineer. As a Staff Simulation Engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
In this role, you will primarily perform gate level simulations of the trapped ion quantum computer. You will help benchmark and characterize the system performance against various noise models. You will work with the engineering team to perform gate level analysis of the current and next generation quantum systems and integration of the simulation software with the rest of the software stack. You will also help build, maintain and test software infrastructure necessary to enable circuit simulations at scale.
Responsibilities:
- Develop methods and algorithms for approximate or exact gate level simulation of quantum circuits of next generation architectures
- Simulate and analyze circuits to examine performance against various noise models
- Benchmark and evaluate performances of various circuit simulation algorithms
- Document and communicate technical findings to the engineering team
- Integrate gate level simulation with other softwares in the simulation stack
- Contribute to the automation, testing and parallelization of the simulation workflow
You’d be a good fit with:
- PhD in Quantum Physics, Engineering or a related field with minimum 3 years of experience
- Experience in quantum computing simulations either at the gate or pulse level
- Python programming for scientific computing
You’d be a great fit with:
- PhD in Quantum Physics, Engineering or a related field with minimum 5 years of experience
- Experience with many-body physics and algorithms, matrix product state and tensor network methods
- Experience with open quantum systems and quantum error correction/mitigation algorithms
- Experience running large scale simulations on CPU/GPU clusters
- Experience with parallel programming in Python/C++
- Experience with AMO physics and trapped ion systems
- Experience with scripting and automating workflows in high-performance computing environments
Location:
This position is located in our newest facility in Bothell, WA.
Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. Depending on the position, you may be required to be located in Washington DC, Seattle, Washington or the Toronto, Canada area. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.

The base pay component of the offer will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
