OVERVIEW

ABOUT THE ROLE
A Decision Scientist Contractor- NextGen is a centralized resource supporting Fulfillment, Inventory, and Strategic teams within NextGen Operations. They leverage our vast data to derive insights into our Operations, Customers, Shoppers, and Retailers. They work closely with leadership to understand key business goals and perform ad hoc analysis to drive critical decision-making that achieves measurable outcomes. They are capable data storytellers, expert statisticians, and excellent communicators.  

This role focuses on sizing the highest-impact opportunities and generating testable hypotheses for achieving that impact. We are seeking a strategic leader, not an ETL developer. This position will require up to 5% travel as you work hands-on with our retail and fulfillment partners

The Next Gen team’s vision is to reshape and diversify Instacart’s fulfillment network by leading disruptive innovation from seed to scale. Our work focuses on strengthening our core grocery business, unlocking growth opportunities via new business, and deepening partner relationships.

ABOUT THE JOB

  • Develop machine learning and statistical models on large datasets to extract trends, measure results and outcomes, and predict future performance
  • Provide analytical insights into opportunities that can be leveraged for growth opportunities and operational efficiency gains
  • Design and deliver experiments across multiple domains to understand the effect of treatments on various user groups
  • Own regular analysis of projects and experiments to inform critical strategic decisions
  • Develop scalable, automated dashboards to provide benchmarking and progress against key performance goals and initiatives; understand root causes of what impacts the attainment of those objectives
  • Review data models and queries while performing regular and ad hoc data analysis to ensure our experience engine is running at full speed
  • Understand the health of the business by defining how metrics are calculated and ensure that the source data matches the needs of the business

ABOUT YOU

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in programming with data science, visualization, and ML libraries in Python or R
  • Experience with A / B testing and ability to run rigorous experiments to come up with scientifically sound recommendations
  • Advanced SQL Skills - able to write complex and performant queries on our Snowflake cluster
  • 4+ years of experience in data science, statistics, business intelligence, or similar roles
  • Creative, intellectually curious, and able to effectively collaborate cross-functionally, partnering with stakeholders to drive business performance
  • Proven ability to work independently, multi-task, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to turn data into a story for our business partners
  • Bachelor’s degree in math, economics, statistics, engineering, computer science, or other quantitative field, or equivalent level of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of experimentation and statistical methods
  • Advanced degree in statistics, math, economics, engineering, computer science, or other quantitative field
  • Exciting side projects or Kaggle competition results
  • Experience in process improvement: You are familiar with lean concepts, such as DMAIC, PDCA, etc., and are energized by continually finding ways to improve our processes.

This role pays $70.60 - $78.30 /hour, dependent on experience, with a schedule of 40 hours/week.
