Description

To reinvent an industry, you have to build the best team. Join Formlabs if you want to bring groundbreaking professional 3D printers to the desktop of every designer, engineer, researcher, and artist in the world.

The Optical and Thermal Systems team works closely with other engineering teams at Formlabs to research and develop our next generation of printers and accessories. We’re looking for an additional team member that can own an entire thermal system, lead a small technical team, think at the system level, work with suppliers, manage prototype builds, develop proper testing strategies, and coordinate with the larger product development team to integrate thermal systems into our products.

If you are an engineer with a passion for designing complex thermo-electro-mechanical systems and are looking to collaborate with a team of high-caliber engineers, we want you to join our team as a Senior Thermal Engineer.

 The Job:

  • Identify and architect viable thermal designs, owning equal parts of technology and product development
  • Establish system requirements and hardware specifications, ensuring seamless integration of your system with the larger printer to deliver optimal end-user performance
  • Act as a technical leader within a group of mechanical, systems, and electrical engineers, designing, reviewing, and guiding junior colleagues’ work and leading technical excellence
  • Design and analyze heaters, temperature sensors, and insulation, from first-principles hand calculations to detailed numerical modeling with analysis software
  • Build, test, and refine designs in both standalone and system-level test beds
  • Partner with operations, manufacturing, and sourcing to help define the supply chaing and finalize designs for production

You:

  • Demonstrate a deep practical understanding of fundamental heat transfer principles, inclusive of radiative, conductive, and convective heat transfer
  • Have designed and owned thermal systems from R+D through production
  • Know when to use napkin math and when to dive into high-fidelity simulations to develop and/or validate a design
  • 5+ years industry experience, with specific experience working on thermal systems
  • Have taken a product through an entire life-cycle, from concept through production
  • Prototype and test your own designs - you like to get your hands dirty in the lab!
  • Strong working knowledge of finite element simulation packages, such as COMSOL, ANSYS, Abaqus, or similar

Bonus Skills (Optional):

  • Familiarity with software and electronics
  • Programming and scientific computing skills, particularly in Python

Our Perks & Benefits:

  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Low-cost fund options in our 401K and access to advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out-of-Office Plan – Take time when you need it
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course… unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.  We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply.  Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.
