Senior Software Engineer - Network Control and Optimization

We are looking for a talented Senior level Software Engineer to help design and build the next generation of Fastly’s network telemetry and traffic engineering systems. You will be responsible for designing and building distributed systems to collect network data at large scale via passive and active measurements, process data efficiently and cost-effectively, and use the results to make real-time network configuration decisions for load balancing, traffic engineering and failover purposes. 

In this role, you will be a part of our network control and optimization group. You can expect fun and complex challenges in near-real-time analysis and distributed systems while working closely with network engineers, kernel developers and data scientists. What You'll Do

• Build end-to-end pipelines to collect, normalize, enrich, transport, and process data from heterogeneous sources across a rapidly scaling network
• Design and build systems that make automated network configuration decisions for load balancing, routing, traffic engineering and failover purposes
• Write tools to efficiently query and explore complex networking-related datasets
• Collaborate to design, build, and deploy software systems to collect, process, and utilize network data
• Study and apply concepts from control theory, optimization and statistics to tackle traffic engineering problems

What We're Looking For

• You MUST have a minimum of 2 years of production experience with coding in GoLang to be successful in this role
• Ability to write code that is performant, maintainable, clear, and concise
• Understanding of the challenges involved in building, operating, and maintaining scalable and reliable data processing systems
• Extensive experience in designing and implementing large-scale and mission-critical software systems
• Experience running, supporting, and using high availability systems and infrastructure

We value a variety of voices, so this is not a laundry list. It would be an added bonus if you have experience in ANY of these:

• Real-world experience in the protocols and practices that make up the fabric of the global internet, including IP, BGP, Anycast, and DNS
• Experience with message queues and storage systems commonly used for processing data for analytics purposes (e.g., Kafka, ClickHouse, Beam, Flink, etc...)
• Experience in network telemetry including instrumenting infrastructure, collecting, processing, storing and analyzing data
• Understanding of probability and statistics as well as experience applying them to novel problems
• Experience working with geographically dispersed teams
• Ability to collect and analyze network traffic data to drive design decisions

The estimated salary range for this position is $155,370 to $194,210.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
