About the role


We are looking for a new Quality Engineering Lead to manage a team of quality engineers deployed in various squads within Digital Transformation, Platforms and Services.  In your role you will ensure quality testing and best practises are implemented and keep abreast of new and relevant technologies to improve and deliver quality experience.  You will be accountable to the Manager of Software Engineering for Business Insights & Analytics.

As a Quality Engineering Lead, you will be part of Elsevier's mission to “help Researchers and Healthcare Professionals advance science and improve health outcomes for the benefit of society.”  You will be working with squads within the highly professional Digital Transformation, Platforms and Services department, a part of Elsevier’s Digital Business Solutions technology group.  The team is responsible for sourcing, transforming and presenting data to provide meaningful understanding of our business and our customers to aid in making informed decisions across the company, including by our C-level directors and CEO.

Your key accountabilities and responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver value and quality products and services on the agreed roadmap.

  • Manage, mentor and provide guidance to a team of quality engineers deployed in a variety of different squads in Digital Transformation, Platforms and Services.

  • Help define technology, testing and Agile strategies working with the Manager of Software Engineering, and your Software Engineering Lead peers in the various squads.

  • Accountable for optimising Agile processes, tools, and techniques to build quality and efficiency.

  • Accountable to identify and implement automation tools / frameworks that enhance testing capabilities and product quality in both functional and non-functional testing.

  • Responsible for identifying, monitoring, and improving quality metrics in the squad.

  • Responsible for test planning and implementing of test strategies and hands-on testing as and when required.

Your most important qualities

  • A strong understanding of the QA methodologies and automation tools that increase testing efficiency.

  • You will have demonstrable experience of test orchestration using CI/CD pipelines.

  • You will have a clear understanding of the correct application of the test pyramid at all levels.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with both business and technology stakeholders.

  • A desire to mentor, inspire and empower individuals and a team to high levels of autonomy and performance.

  • A drive to deliver quality products by identifying and resolving quality and process issues.

  • Self-motivated, with a desire to understand data and analytics and learn new tools and techniques.

  • Experience with software development in any high-level language such as Python, Go, Java, etc.

  • Experience in developing and testing in SQL.

Recommended experience

  • Proven experience of working in a high-performing Agile software and/or data engineering / quality teams.

  • Direct experience of managing and developing a team of professional quality engineers.

  • Any previous experience working with Oracle, MS SQL or Snowflake databases, data visualisation tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI), or user interface applications would be advantageous for this role.

  • Understanding and experience of working with data warehousing integrations, testing large data sets, using golden data, or working with transformation (ETL) processes, such as Dbt, Talend, Airflow, AWS Glue, etc.

  • Experience of collaborating with modern CI/CD in data engineering and platform ecosystems (inc. tools, technology like Jenkins, AWS, Selenium, etc.
