Description

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

In our cars, you’re free to be yourself. It’s the same here at Cruise. We’re creating a culture that values the experiences and contributions of all of the unique individuals who collectively make up Cruise, so that every employee can do their best work.

Cruise is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, both in our workplace and in our products. If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, come join us. Even if you might not meet every requirement, we strongly encourage you to apply. You might just be the right candidate for us.

We are looking for a Staff Acoustic Engineer, Vibroacoustic Design Lead to provide technical guidance related to acoustic key product characteristics (KPCs) to the mechanical engineers supporting acoustic components. They will also provide guidance and prioritization to acoustic engineers performing acoustic simulations informing mechanical design. This role includes outward facing facets, for example representing Cruise with design partners in sensor integration forums. In this hybrid working arrangement, a baseline of 2-3 days a week onsite is expected.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Coordinating with international cross-functional design partners towards integration of acoustic sensors

  • Collaboration with mechanical engineers towards development and refinement of sensor enclosures, mounting strategies, and bracketry with acoustic requirements in mind

  • Oversight over the development of 3D and 2D drawings, and tolerance definition given acoustic KPCs

  • Development and documentation of acoustically critical KPCs

  • Managing and communicating mechanical engineering development schedules in light of acoustic testing and simulation with component technical leads, program managers and development partners, with awareness to timing and commercial impacts on development partners

  • Managing and prioritizing BEM / FEM simulations of acoustic components towards KPC definition

  • Coordinating experimental approaches when simulation is not appropriate

  • Coordinating with mechanical engineers and vendors to drive to material selection for various acoustically critical sub-components

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:

  • 10+ years of experience cumulative contributing to acoustically critical mechanical design

  • A foundation in physical acoustics, specifically:

    • Sound propagation in air and solids

    • Acoustic coupling of airborne and structure borne sound (radiation problems, transmission loss)

    • Acoustic scattering

    • Modal analysis

  • Exposure to design for manufacture, ability to advocate for acoustic requirements with manufacturability in mind

  • Acoustic FEM / BEM simulation experience

  • Ability to work with international cross functional teams with cultural sensitivity

  • Experience collaborating with industrial designers, manufacturing teams, and systems engineers

  • A history of delivering functional, aesthetically appealing mechanical design solutions for acoustically critical parts

BONUS POINTS!

  • Experience in acoustic consulting, the automotive/medical/defense industry

  • Experience integrating accelerometers, microphones, and/or transducers generally,  across audible and ultrasonic ranges

  • An understanding of CPK analysis

  • Matlab proficiency

  • Experience with ingress protection standards, testing, and mitigations

  • Experience with shock and vibration requirements, testing, and mitigation

The salary range for this position is $148,600 - $218,500. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
