About the Team 

At Capella we task and operate our satellites entirely via a fully automated API. The Capella Platform Engineering team is responsible for building and operating all of Capella’s customer-facing APIs, apps, and systems, including algorithms and analytics. We have built an API-first customer-facing platform, with various applications, GUIs, and SDKs on top.  Our systems operate in the cloud (AWS) and on-prem, primarily on AWS & Kubernetes based infrastructure. 

About The Role 

Capella is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Platform Engineering team, responsible for building and operating Capella’s customer facing systems and APIs. You’ll be responsible for day-to-day product delivery and execution, testing, designing and implementing new systems.  Areas you will work on at Capella include the data archive, searching & indexing, data ingest & product generation, business systems integration, business intelligence, and geospatial streaming & tiling systems, as well as public-facing APIs that expose internal Capella systems such as satellite tasking, scheduling, and feasibility.

Responsibilities 

• External facing API improvements - ranging from new customer tasking, scheduling, and capacity-reservation use-cases to product delivery
• Refactoring various software & system components to enable on-prem deployment & operations
• System engineering and architecture, particularly for high volume, horizontally scalable, cloud-based applications & APIs
• Practice of the whole software development life cycle – you design it, you code it, you ship it, you own it

Experience

• Significant experience working with REST API’s and application development
• Expert knowledge of micro- web frameworks in python like FastAPI and node.js like express.js
• Advanced knowledge of AWS best practices, in particular AWS’ serverless offering (Cloudfront, API GW, Lambda, Batch, SNS, SQS, Eventbridge, ...)
• Professional experience with cloud deployments (Kubernetes/ serverless applications)
• Experience with WAFs, monitoring & testing tools, code scanning tools & associated security requirements
• Excellent communication, writing, and cross-team collaboration skills - able to work independently under tight deadlines in a start-up environment

Preferred

• Background of working with geospatial and/or remote sensing technology, geospatial data products in various formats, and remote sensing applications in one or more market verticals
• Experience working with geospatial data - Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) or EO
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of technical education and work experience.
