Make your impact within a rapidly growing Fintech Company
BILL is looking for a Senior Staff Performance Engineer to help design and build a comprehensive performance test framework. This framework will be used by engineering teams across BILL to anticipate and catch performance issues and identify bottlenecks in both pre-production and production environments. This is a high visibility position that will play a pivotal role in this product’s success, and make an impact across the company!
We’d love to chat if you have:
- 12+ years of proven experience in software engineering, with 6+ years focusing on performance, scale and complex SaaS applications in the cloud
- 5+ years of experience in any one of the load simulation tools: JMeter or Gatling
- Good understanding of both the art and science of benchmark creation and measurement and modeling of system behavior under load
- Strong grasp of JAVA fundamentals and modern full stack architecture patterns
- Ability to find root cause of performance bottlenecks with open source profiling tools
- Strong understanding of OS fundamentals (Mac/ Linux/ Windows) and proven expertise in solving OS level performance issues and browser issues
- Experience in database tuning and optimization (e.g. connection pools, indexes, hints, plans, SQL) using AWR reports
- Ability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks at the code level and experience in the internals of JVMs, performance profiling and optimization
- Display extreme ownership and lead performance initiatives across cross-functional team boundaries by being proactive on potential production impacting issues
- Ability to challenge the norm and advocate for changes for the greater benefit of the business
- Experience in analyzing Thread dumps, Memory dumps for bottlenecks
- Background with test and server monitoring tools (e.g. Data dog, Splunk, New Relic)
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or related field (preferred)

This role is based in California.
The estimated base salary range for this role is noted below for our office location in San Jose, CA. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in BILL’s bonus and equity plan. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits.
