As the Senior Director of Engineering at Alto, you will assume a pivotal role in propelling the organization's engineering operations forward as we embark on our scaling journey. Directly overseeing Engineering, IT, and Security, you will wield your expertise to foster innovation, streamline processes, and fortify our technological infrastructure. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will serve as a linchpin in shaping Alto's technological landscape, security protocols, and cultivating an enriching employee experience.

  • Leadership: Chart a course of visionary leadership for the engineering team, cultivating a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Define clear objectives and steer the team towards the attainment of strategic milestones.
  • Technical Strategy: Craft and execute a comprehensive technical strategy harmonized with Alto's overarching business objectives. Remain vigilant of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to sustain our position as a pioneer of innovation.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Forge collaborative ties with other departments, such as product management, marketing, and sales, to synchronize engineering endeavors with broader business imperatives. Foster seamless communication and cooperation across multifunctional teams.
  • Team Development: Spearhead the recruitment, mentoring, and advancement of a high-performing engineering cadre. Provide tailored coaching, constructive feedback, and avenues for professional growth to bolster the prowess of team members.
  • Project Management: Oversee the seamless execution of engineering projects, ensuring punctual delivery within budgetary confines. Implement and uphold robust project management methodologies to streamline operations.
  • Quality Assurance: Institute and uphold stringent quality standards and protocols to uphold the delivery of dependable, high-caliber products. Deploy testing processes and methodologies to safeguard product integrity.
  • Resource Management: Astutely manage engineering resources, encompassing budgetary allocations, staffing initiatives, and technological provisions. Optimize resource distribution to maximize operational efficiency and productivity.

A Bit About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 12 years of progressive Engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in engineering and product domains for at least 8 years.
  • Proficiency in managing highly scalable services.
  • Proven track record of collaborating closely with product and business leaders to formulate strategies, roadmaps, and features.
  • Strong technical acumen with a robust background in the startup ecosystem.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving prowess.
  • Superlative communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to foster innovation and navigate change.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Deep understanding of cutting-edge technologies and engineering practices relevant to our industry.
  • Expertise in Startups, Healthcare, AI/ML/Data Interoperability highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in steering engineering teams towards the development of scalable systems.
  • Proficiency in architecting and managing solutions adaptable to growth and heightened demand.
  • History of driving innovation and surmounting complex engineering challenges.
  • Keen awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and market dynamics.
  • Track record of successful collaboration with cross-functional teams, including product management, marketing, and sales.

Additional Physical Job Requirements

  • Read English, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions.  The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.  Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.  Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
  • Frequent repeating motions required to operate a computer that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Sedentary work: Sitting most of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $224,000 - $280,000

 Commission Eligible: No

Equity Eligible: Yes 

Travel: Yes - Required up to 25% of the time  

Location Requirement: Employment at Alto is limited to individuals residing in the following states: Washington, California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, and New York.

Employment Requirement: Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.  At this time, Alto is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa.
