Principal PLC Controls Engineer

Alert Innovation, now powered by Walmart, is a fast-growing venture on a mission to reinvent retailing through robotics. We’ve partnered with Walmart to develop our Alphabot® technology, which is currently being deployed at stores throughout North America.

As we continue to grow and create more products, we are looking to hire an experienced Controls Engineer to help shape our state-of-the-art robotic inventory management system.

The right candidate will have a wealth of experience developing safety-rated PLC software for use in automation or process industries. This individual will help refine our PLC development processes, while also providing architectural guidance and direct contributions to modular and scalable PLC implementations. A strong electrical and controls background is required, but so is a willingness to rapidly grow and develop new skills as needed.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON:

  • Using commercial components, help architect and design the control systems for the world’s highest throughput automated picking, storage and retrieval system.
  • Transform functional requirements into concepts of operations, architectures, and low-level technical requirements.
  • Code PLC designs, conduct simulation and verification, and support validation.
  • Evaluate controllers, networks, and related components to optimize solutions for cost, performance, and reliability requirements.
  • Work closely with adjacent disciplines of electrical, mechanical and, software engineering.
  • Help define, author, and improve processes to ensure efficiency, quality, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Write technical design documentation such as functional specifications, design verification plans and reports, presentations, etc.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • 10+ years of experience developing SCADA PLC-based controls.
  • Experience leading a team and projects, and mentoring junior staff.
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal and SIMATIC development tools.
  • Understanding of industrial ethernet networks, including ProfiNET.
  • Experience with FMEA / risk assessment, ISO 12100.
  • A practical understanding of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and ISO 13489, PL evaluation tools such as Systema or equivalent.
  • Capable of influencing and driving collaborative consensus.
  • Experience shepherding designs through 3rd party evaluation.
  • Ability to travel within the USA up to 25%, typically to customer sites.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working without direction or supervision to achieve team goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • BS/MS in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
